Toric Contact Lenses For Astigmatism

Astigmatism is the type of vision problem more people are suffering from. Although it is a very common, if not one of the most common vision condition people know few things about it. Astigmatism is a refractive error, which usually may accompany nearsightedness or farsightedness. In the majority of cases it is caused by an irregular shaped cornea, but in cases it results from an irregular lens. The early symptoms of astigmatism are minimal, in many cases unnoticeable. People having astigmatism in the early phase might notice some blur in their vision. An uncorrected corneal astigmatism can cause more severe headaches, blurry and distorted vision at all distances or eye strain. Astigmatism usually occurs when the shape of the cornea, which in the normal case is spherical, is shaped in an oblong or oval way.

In astigmatic eyes the irregular shaped cornea focuses light rays on two points to the back of the eye, instead of on one point as it is in the normal case; this irregular light focus causes the blurry and distorted vision. Regular astigmatism can easily be corrected, but irregular astigmatism, mostly if it is in an advanced state can be harder to treat, depending on the extension of irregularity.

Less extreme cases of astigmatism can easily be treated with the help of contact lenses and eyeglasses. There are mainly two types of contact lenses to correct astigmatism, the rigid gas permeable contact lenses, and newly soft toric contact lenses for astigmatism correction. Toric contact lenses are special prescription contact lenses, which might contain prescription for nearsightedness and farsightedness too. According to the severity of the astigmatism in some cases rigid contact lenses can be beneficial for some and soft toric contact lenses for others.

Toric contact lenses are made from the same materials as other contact lenses; the design of the lens is the difference. These contact lenses have two powers, curvatures are what they are created with; one curvature is for astigmatism, and according to the problem, the other for myopia or presbyopia. Toric contact lenses cannot rotate on your eyes in order to stay stable when you look around or blink.

While in the early years of toric contact lenses’ apparition there was one type of toric contact lens, nowadays multifocal, color and disposable toric contact lenses are available all over the market. There are numerous brands of toric contact lenses being available as frequently replaceable, monthly disposable and even daily disposable ones. If you cannot decide which type of contact lens to choose for astigmatism correction, your eye care practitioner can help you chose RGP or soft toric contact lenses.
